font-size: medium;">This ad for the Barbie Dream House Pop Up Tent by Sunny Days Entertainment was in the 2023 Hammacher-Schlemmer catalogue. The indoor tent is meant for little girls, not dolls. The house is too oversized for an 11 1/2 inch doll and too undersized for the new 28-inch Barbie doll. It's probably the right size for an 18-inch SuperSize doll.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">What initially threw me in this ad is what I thought was a swimming pool. It is the correct size for a regular fashion doll and would be perfect for 11 1/2 inch dolls to swim in. However, it is a ball pit, which I didn't realize until I saw other listings for this tent on the Internet. Even as a ball pit, it would be a disappointment for children, though, as there are only 20 balls, not nearly enough to surround oneself in.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I wish Mattel would make a swimming pool this size for Barbie that could actually hold water.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I've not looked for any of these tents in person so I don't know how sturdy they are. They were called Talking Busy dolls and consisted of Barbie, Ken and Steffie. Barbie had short straight blonde hair. Steffie was also blonde, and she was the first doll to have what was then called a shag haircut. I own Talking Barbie only.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The girl dolls were different from any other doll Mattel had yet made--the haircuts were the most obvious sign. They had the regular talking doll legs that could be crossed, the talking doll body, the Living Barbie soft bendable arms, and hands with opposable thumbs so they could hold things. There was also a separate line just called Busy Barbie and Busy Steffie; they didn't talk but they did have the Living Barbie arms and the opposable thumbs.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Talking Busy Barbie wore her sexiest outfit yet, an electric blue satin pair of overalls with very short legs, and an attached cerise red tricot turtleneck. In other words, her torso, neck and arms were completely covered but her legs were very exposed! Too hot to wear in the summer and too cold to wear in the winter.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The long-sleeved blouse had another purpose--to hold on her arms. This particular line didn't have the leg and hip problem but rather they were with the shoulder attachments. Of course, the little thumbs were also prone to breaking off, but I am fortunate on that my doll hasn't had that.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">These dolls were made in Hong Kong and had 29 holes on their backs. The outfit has a tag that just reads "HONG KONG".</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIlKUXjMIWVGqFJvCG3XbpnqEz0bhyphenhyphenjZmii7GdSrh2VcVzlCMEsvXqNu80E7ajoXjz0CwsUjvY0_Q2y7sxDZJr8RFQNDUlFb7kkazaOulaswGrxCRrwJ_dW82duvc9dvBTBx6BFFU-wNrSK0VOrkNRy3ck5C1l1U4lEEMzfVVvc0e5JGmJ8fOUNpUBFMZb/s4790/1972%20talk%20busy%20b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; Is she a Barbie friend, or an acquaintance, or, as some have suggested, Mattel's own Barbie knockoff? (I am not using the word "clone" because that term in regards to Barbie didn't exist in 1976. The competitors at that time were referred to as knockoffs.)</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Sweet 16 has a hard plastic, straight-legged body, like the Bubblecuts and Ponytails of the 1960s and the Standard Barbies of the early 1970s. The doll was not made in Japan, as those earlier dolls were, but in Korea. Sweet 16's markings on her backside say MATTEL™/1966/KOREA.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I've never been sure what the deal is with Sweet 16's hair and face. Her tresses are straggly just-past-her-shoulders straight and pure white. Her face is also very pale. Despite her name, is she supposed to be an older woman? Or does she have albinism? Her facial features and large eyes are said to be the same as the Living Eli Barbie friend sold only in Japan in 1970, but I've never seen a resemblance.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Twelve outfits, similar to Barbie's Best Buys, were sold for Sweet 16 in 1976. Most of them were Barbie outfits made in different fabrics. So if you find a mid-1970s Best Buy in a color variation, it is not a rare item, it's just one for Sweet 16. None of the outfits were sold with shoes, but if you want to be correct for the time period, have the doll wear shoes or boots from Korea.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The doll was sold in an orange one-piece nylon swimsuit. Now here is where it gets confusing. In 1977, Kmart had three exclusives called Barbie and her Super Fashion Fireworks.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">One set came with Sweet 16 outfits 9551 (yellow blouse and orange striped slacks), 9554 (peach baby dolls), 9555 (long blue peasant dress) and 9557 </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">(long pink dress and white apron)</span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">. A second one included 9559 (white slacks, yellow halter, blue jacket), 9552 (striped shirt and orange skirt), 9560 (yellow skirt and halter with red flowered trim) and 9561 (long red orchid print dress). The third was sold with 9550 (orange dress with yellow stripe in front), 9553 (long yellow flowered jumper and white blouse), 9556 (green print jacket and pink bell bottoms) and 9558 (red print flowered peasant gown and white apron with matching ruffle). Barbie was a straight-leg straight waisted doll and she, too, wore the same orange swimsuit as Sweet 16. Her backside has the same markings as does Sweet 16, but in a slightly different arrangement.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">You can find lots of pictures in books and on the Internet of Sweet 16 in her box, and her outfits still in their packaging. What you won't see is her wearing them, and that is the purpose of this post. I have some of her outfits but many aren't complete. When I started collecting in the 1980s, Sweet 16 and her fashions were easy to find, both in and out of packaging. Now they 9552 are rare.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I wish I had more of the following outfits so that you can compare them yourselves. Here is a list of the 1975 Barbie Best Buys, followed by their corresponding Sweet 16 outfits from 1976.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">7206/9559</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">7208 Romantic Look/9558</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">7210 On Vacation/9560</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">7420/9550</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">7421/9551 The slacks and cap are the same in both sets. Barbie's shirt is orange with long yellow raglan sleeves, while Sweet 16's is simply a yellow T-shirt.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">7422/9522</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">7423/9553</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">9006/9561</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">9008/9554</span></p><p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe2gGJqd7CauF9Fh6OHrYFSiAiWLHgG1pLz8J2MhfKiR7v_ITH7sNBVXLsrzV9oM_k8TPdvQiAj99rBf0DEj5aMgo820Plw7Y8dzixlP7W1faI-Ldf33vJwPH92QVjKpB5KsFbZNQ6pbeY0AP7eE4p5n9ebsb6rnMdtFs0nNVY6RgJagQtuTcS3xSfLvMJ/s4404/1976%20sweet%2016%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4404" data-original-width="1645" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe2gGJqd7CauF9Fh6OHrYFSiAiWLHgG1pLz8J2MhfKiR7v_ITH7sNBVXLsrzV9oM_k8TPdvQiAj99rBf0DEj5aMgo820Plw7Y8dzixlP7W1faI-Ldf33vJwPH92QVjKpB5KsFbZNQ6pbeY0AP7eE4p5n9ebsb6rnMdtFs0nNVY6RgJagQtuTcS3xSfLvMJ/w150-h400/1976%20sweet%2016%202.jpg" width="150" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I decided that since Sweet 16 looks older,<br />I would dress her as a 1970s woman in her 60s.<br />I pulled her hair into a bun<br />and dressed her in Barbie's 9155 At the Supermarket, from 1976.<br /><br /></span></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /><span><br /></span></span></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjetecbrAPLmemOl0ghN6122Ab1qyCbLOWWNqUMslK0ZOSAIcIQyULMUSnYeDHk9_w9KRKm15urrTXXprRQP3i7wV36SWn4DGmDsNoZYu25bWaabkJDsOGvwHh_9B7YdHYTvv9VzMJrB5SZtpP_XwnAr346Ji-hTPl3Dv1rnRQXOb6EWClYsTxmQwyE0SUB/s4590/1976%20sweet%2016.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4590" data-original-width="2095" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjetecbrAPLmemOl0ghN6122Ab1qyCbLOWWNqUMslK0ZOSAIcIQyULMUSnYeDHk9_w9KRKm15urrTXXprRQP3i7wV36SWn4DGmDsNoZYu25bWaabkJDsOGvwHh_9B7YdHYTvv9VzMJrB5SZtpP_XwnAr346Ji-hTPl3Dv1rnRQXOb6EWClYsTxmQwyE0SUB/w293-h640/1976%20sweet%2016.jpg" width="293" /></span></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I personally consider Sweet 16 a Barbie acquaintance,<br />and most definitely NOT a knockoff.<br /><br /></span></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizbR9E0vtydobz9L6WhFA0B2HMaQx960uF3ESL7dWI0Kk3wQiItE7AV9RXd3PYL-brwflrld43kzx0mcMn-EFhwIbOpxvjBJFvHDokitb0NtYq5k8nuVf5nKK2R6Knt5ZF6Q2H9XD9hKl5tRi_iIxqsDS1v8xlCB1Pke14LJdXaQw1OesR3FgHSpCCeH6P/s4363/1976%20sweet%2016%209559.jpg" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4363" data-original-width="1705" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizbR9E0vtydobz9L6WhFA0B2HMaQx960uF3ESL7dWI0Kk3wQiItE7AV9RXd3PYL-brwflrld43kzx0mcMn-EFhwIbOpxvjBJFvHDokitb0NtYq5k8nuVf5nKK2R6Knt5ZF6Q2H9XD9hKl5tRi_iIxqsDS1v8xlCB1Pke14LJdXaQw1OesR3FgHSpCCeH6P/w250-h640/1976%20sweet%2016%209559.jpg" width="250" /></span></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">This is 9559, which is supposed to come with a yellow nylon halter<br />which I don't have. font-size: large;">We went to a craft show last Saturday, Oct. 7. One woman was selling fleece shirts for Elf on the Shelf. They looked like they would fit Ken so I bought one. Most of her shirts had copyrighted/trademarked figures on them, and most likely she did not have the licensing to put them on her shirts, and I refuse to buy merchandise without licensing permits.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;">I bought one that seemed generic. You will have to tell me if "Official Cookie Taster" is copyrighted, as I</span><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;"> don't know.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;">I tried to put the shirt on a Ken from the 1980s, but I could not fit the shirt over his straight arms that spread out a little when you put them up over his head. I then tried the 1976 Young Sweethearts Michael, who is thinner and has bendable arms and wrists. With a little finagling, I got the shirt on him.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;">So if you buy one of these shirts, you will need to put it on Michael, Shaun, Tom Comet, Phoebus or Roller Blade Ken, as it will not fit over the regular Ken. I do not know if it will fit the 1960s Kens or the current thinner flexible male dolls by Mattel.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;">(On a related note, I always thought the 1976 Michael was way better looking than the 1975 Now Look Ken.)</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;"><br /></span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTgwGsQdN2FNGw-o9X-1d9Vs1u7RG5V-D-yxZbYlek20STak-5mK7WOCHAx8cyzbD-SVvnUrCf6eTN-SnaGrfk0DQWq8jfj7dtAKmBmFAx5IyTZZg4mystR85kGyfDEAwcGvFjCb2L0ZxvekqffcnyWjW5QCKtbmDSrtk5VOKgJeWSfe7ef_yolaj_ZnOK/s3353/elf%20fleece%201.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3353" data-original-width="2828" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTgwGsQdN2FNGw-o9X-1d9Vs1u7RG5V-D-yxZbYlek20STak-5mK7WOCHAx8cyzbD-SVvnUrCf6eTN-SnaGrfk0DQWq8jfj7dtAKmBmFAx5IyTZZg4mystR85kGyfDEAwcGvFjCb2L0ZxvekqffcnyWjW5QCKtbmDSrtk5VOKgJeWSfe7ef_yolaj_ZnOK/w338-h400/elf%20fleece%201.jpg" width="338" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The seller placed the shirts in regular plastic bags,<br />then stapled her label on top.</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPBIkiXA7e9Q146HP5P_ondr0HkokOqIFRSsoQ_NTs3jC_cj_iKtpUdAz2GLtlasTKS_fQPCW1rVCIAlkFt_RjpZU_HRCxZfnm8EsKiZVolghpU4nTMlB0C2RM04Y9oACPUOK7KErCR4U12IiFBOU6VYLP4u_1iXjhXDu258HV_oJGTbhSypUi_99yMc0X/s3454/elf%20fleece%202.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3454" data-original-width="2611" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPBIkiXA7e9Q146HP5P_ondr0HkokOqIFRSsoQ_NTs3jC_cj_iKtpUdAz2GLtlasTKS_fQPCW1rVCIAlkFt_RjpZU_HRCxZfnm8EsKiZVolghpU4nTMlB0C2RM04Y9oACPUOK7KErCR4U12IiFBOU6VYLP4u_1iXjhXDu258HV_oJGTbhSypUi_99yMc0X/w303-h400/elf%20fleece%202.jpg" width="303" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">All of Michael's original outfits are for spring or summer,<br />so he was happy to have a warmer shirt to wear!</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNYJBAQqX4TKa4WYZV-eES7mHlviPDElFhCEF8ciO5cdt2SgvSkW60OA8b-PcrnVWTiZtd0IqpNeV_yN6vwIeJmw2o4CfUbWYAbMp0AkI09nXzijKr0X-bTZJGARZgXLKs46b7_2wCrCVy_z0l19lbGyl9cOqLVVq8r-ypBeHbb3VXdP8YG0jpjMcV_LSU/s3492/elf%20fleece%203.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3492" data-original-width="2349" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNYJBAQqX4TKa4WYZV-eES7mHlviPDElFhCEF8ciO5cdt2SgvSkW60OA8b-PcrnVWTiZtd0IqpNeV_yN6vwIeJmw2o4CfUbWYAbMp0AkI09nXzijKr0X-bTZJGARZgXLKs46b7_2wCrCVy_z0l19lbGyl9cOqLVVq8r-ypBeHbb3VXdP8YG0jpjMcV_LSU/w269-h400/elf%20fleece%203.jpg" width="269" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The sweatshirt is a true pullover,<br />with no openings in the front or back.</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;"><br /></span><p></p>skippercollectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00879839553080884379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4763458272128753592.post-47385871703196405532023-09-26T12:21:00.000-04:002023-09-26T12:21:04.961-04:002 UNCLE items for sale<p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I know this is tacky to mention this, but I have had two Man from UNCLE items for sale for a while, and I wondered if people would be looking for David McCallum merchandise. I will write about Ken in a future article. I own three 1969 Talking Barbies, one additional Barbie head and one Talking Stacey, so the article will focus on them.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I don't know if this is true of all of this year's dolls, but my 1969 Talkers have much more hair than their 1968 counterparts. Note that Barbie's ponytail is always on the right while Stacey's is always on the left. The bodies were made in Mexico. The dolls of earlier in the year had heads from Japan and wore the 1968 pink sleeveless sweater and pink plastic panties. The dolls later in the year wore an orange bikini and a lacy coverup, and their heads were from Hong Kong.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The dolls' backs had 29 holes. I am assuming it was a cost-cutting measure in eliminating the process to make more holes.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Yes, I had to wrap sealing tape around one doll's hips to make her legs stay on.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The dolls sold between 1968 and 1976 are of two types: those that are indestructible and those that fell apart within a year or two. Most of the Twist n Turn dolls and the Malibus would survive being run over by a tank. Beginning with the Talking dolls in 1968, however, their survival rate is another story.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">My first article on this subject will be about the 1968 Barbie talking dolls. My sister, Barb, got Talking Barbie for Christmas and I received Talking Stacey. Poor Talking Barbie lost her legs within two years. I don't know whatever happened to my Stacey; I think I gave her away since with her white hair I thought she was a grandmother doll. (Barb got a Living Barbie and I received Twist n Turn PJ as replacements in 1970.) Ironically, their original outfits and their plastic stools are still with us, impossible to kill.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The Talking dolls' bodies and heads varied over the years. In the first year, the bodies were made in Mexico and their backs had 32 holes. The heads were made in Japan, and their pink plastic panties had Japan tags.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The problem with a 1968 Talking Barbie begins with her torso. The plastic is much harder than other dolls and quickly becomes brittle. The knobs that connect the arms and legs break off. In recent years, the neck rims of my dolls have also broken off. The used dolls I've picked up at flea markets have had unusual surgery to repair the limbs. The owners must have had an awl to pierce the hips all the way through. One has a nail through her legs and groin; the other has had elastic sewn through the upper legs and lower torso. I've heard of having a pin in one's hip but this is ridiculous!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-size: medium;">My own solution has been sheer sealing/packing</span><span> </span></span><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">tape for the limbs, plus I have Super-glued the heads to the necks.</span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I've often wondered if Mattel was aware of these problems with the limbs even when production first began. I know that the hips were made looser so that Barbie could cross her ankles modestly. The panties that came with the first Talking dolls (Barbie, Christie and Stacey) are form fitting and they help hold the legs in place.</span></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; font-size: medium;">I have finished reading <i>Barbie and Ruth</i>, a very extensive biography of Ruth Handler written by Robin Gerber, published in 2009 by HarperCollins. This was a gift from my cousin Cathy when things had gotten bad with my family, and she sent it to me to cheer me up. (Yes, the book did help me escape some of the trials we've had in the past few months.)</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I'm not going to go into much about Ruth's life as written in the book, as that has been discussed in other media extensively. I will say that Gerber wrote much much more about the Handlers and their dismissal from Mattel, and then the various court cases against Ruth for fraud, than I've seen elsewhere</span><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;">. The charges make much more sense than they did in the other books I've read, which tended to downplay or skip over a lot of details.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Here are some points about the book that stood out to me:</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Gerber emphasizes a number of times about how diverse Mattel's staff was in beginning in the 1960s, with women designers and executives, and many people of color.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The details about Jack Ryan's private life would have been amusing if they hadn't been so creepy.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I never knew that Elliot was so shy. He just wanted to design toys and let Ruth take care of all of the other details involving the making and selling of them.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Previous books have written that Ken Handler died of encephalitis, but Gerber wrote that he did die of AIDS, and that it was many years before he told his wife and parents that he was gay.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">In the 1940s, just after Ruth and Elliot had married and moved to Los Angeles and Barbara was born, Elliot got a partner for his Elliot Handler Plastics company. The man's name was Zachary Zemby and they formed a company called Elzac. The company made costume jewelry out of ceramic, wood and scrap Lucite. The jewelry was very popular. I had never read about this before and had never heard of the company. Have any of you ever seen Elzac jewelry? Is it very costly?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I wonder whatever happened to Harold Matson? Gerber wrote that when he left Mattel, the Handlers never saw him again.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">As expected, there were just two brief mentions of poor neglected Skipper. Surprisingly, even Tutti and Todd were included in a sentence. However, Francie got 10 whole sentences!</span></p>skippercollectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00879839553080884379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4763458272128753592.post-27720587941607296452023-01-09T18:31:00.007-05:002023-01-09T18:31:36.638-05:00Made-for-TV holiday movies were overwhelming in 2022<p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">1991 was the biggest year ever for Barbie-related weddings.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">First, of course, that year, was the marriage of Midge and Allan. A huge doll set with the couple in their wedding outfits, Barbie and Ken as their attendants, a revived Todd as ring bearer, and a larger Kelly as the flower girl. You could get the four adult dolls separately as well, plus a gift set with only Kelly and Todd, several playsets including a chapel, and four honeymoon outfits for Midge.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Of course, you could always buy a separate bridal gown for Barbie (there were at least four of them) and a tuxedo for Ken. I recently discovered a gift set that I never knew existed from 1991 that had outfits for Barbie, Ken and a Barbie friend in a beautiful box that could be cut apart to make a small chapel with stained glass windows.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">This was #793 Special Wedding Fashions Set. It contained the Barbie bridal gown that you see pictured on the upper right <a href="https://www.appletreeauction.com/auction-lot/4-nrfp-vintage-1990-barbie-bridal-collection._CAE400991E">https://www.appletreeauction.com/auction-lot/4-nrfp-vintage-1990-barbie-bridal-collection._CAE400991E</a>, Ken Wedding Collection #8307 <a href="http://www.manbehindthedoll.com/8307.htm">http://www.manbehindthedoll.com/8307.htm</a>, and a pink version of Barbie Fantasy Fashion <a href="https://www.ebay.com/itm/133789929044">https://www.ebay.com/itm/133789929044</a>, see the back of the box.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">There is one puzzling item in this set. If you look at the link of the Ken outfit, you will see him wearing this scarf on top of his tuxedo, and I think it looks incongruous. It measures 1 inch wide by 11 inches long. To me, it looks like the stole that a minister wears over the alb. I guess if you have a loose white dress or robe that a fashion doll would wear, you could wrap the scarf around the neck?</span></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA-W3pKaefnu0uWoMqCTisJq7eFq6chjqaTvaBJBrjkHPdKTtNeqhF2Y9GQUurLvNOvcxXPxy0X_-SXSGtS2xvCys3zIlxllhldSnwXt6tFCfLcpCOoJUTivZX0lbzOmSFK5Jr8Db8sktzP1FrA35fNnDc7iW1XVW5Ikv0Y5Ncw0d5ckxaQig5GRNq2g/s3914/1991%20special%20wedding%20box%20back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; font-size: medium;"><i>The Wall Street Journal</i> published an article about what is being called "Barbiecore," bright color-blocked clothing inspired by the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. It was written by Katharine K. Zarrella and was published in the Aug. 20, 2022, issue.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I have a hard copy of the article (thanks, Barb!) and photographed it in sections. You can look it up in <i>The Wall Street Journal</i> archives, but since there is a paywall (you have to have a subscription), I decided the easiest way for the public to read it online would be to photograph it in sections. Look carefully at the photos--they are numbered. If you click on a photo, it will be enlarged.</span></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU08-ZE26mY5LQrmY43LI_mhVyi8QXSM65T-u0iFb9qOEF8MqADLgB1GgdyG-SX-vqI7lz5l02rXv0zdw2aZLzdIl_SYpcXzCYLqNlsyYHi_4soGbQHO6JBno8wB0ovX0CwAGQ-dhuqV95ZQ8CLD1YTMq86U5CnZFDvBk1MUz5qmAgTMz94cr32o5XBw/s3438/22%208%2020%20wsj%201.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3438" data-original-width="3359" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU08-ZE26mY5LQrmY43LI_mhVyi8QXSM65T-u0iFb9qOEF8MqADLgB1GgdyG-SX-vqI7lz5l02rXv0zdw2aZLzdIl_SYpcXzCYLqNlsyYHi_4soGbQHO6JBno8wB0ovX0CwAGQ-dhuqV95ZQ8CLD1YTMq86U5CnZFDvBk1MUz5qmAgTMz94cr32o5XBw/w391-h400/22%208%2020%20wsj%201.jpg" width="391" /></span></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">1. font-size: medium;">The 2022 Barbie Pop-Up Tour Truck came to Kenwood Towne Centre in Cincinnati on Saturday, Aug. 13, parked in front of Arhaus Furniture. It was a completely different truck from what was driven in 2021.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">It was advertised as the Malibu Barbie Pop-Up Truck Tour, but the van itself had "West Coast Wave" on it. I looked up the vehicle itself; it is a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and the license plate says, "BARBIER." I explained to a mother and little daughter attending that Barbie's full name was Barbara Millicent Roberts, hence the "R."</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Last year's truck visit was widely publicized and I had to stand in line to get to the van. This year had almost no advertising and the only reason I knew about it was because my friend Meg in Southern California sent me an article about it!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I took four of my Malibu Barbies with me to show the sellers in the van, and the one guy was thrilled that I brought them. I brought with me the 1971 SunSet, 1979 Sun Lovin', 1982 SunSational and 1984 Sun Gold, all redressed in outfits from the same year that they were sold. The logo on the side of the truck was the the curlicue one that was used between 1976 and 1992.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">There weren't any items designed for Barbie dolls for sale. You can see what was sold in the photo I took of the sign. I bought the T-shirt, which has the 1970s stretchy trim on the sleeves and collar. I also got two decals.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Here is a link to the tour: <a href="https://shop.mattel.com/pages/barbie-truck-tour">https://shop.mattel.com/pages/barbie-truck-tour</a></span></p><p><br /></p>skippercollectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00879839553080884379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4763458272128753592.post-25600417135867730192022-08-11T18:54:00.005-04:002022-08-11T18:54:43.012-04:00You can ignore these photos<p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I am placing these two photos here because I am creating links to them for two unrelated topics. font-size: medium;">The first of the numerous Happy Birthday Barbie was sold in 1981 (box date 1980), and she was also sold in 1982 and 1983. Her hair, skin color and gift box all varied greatly, but surprisingly, her dress stayed pretty much the same. However, the skirt's butterfly decals come off easily.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Happy Birthday Barbie, the 1983 version (1982 box date), was the first doll I bought new at the store when I started collecting. I had been buying loose older ones for at least a year before I broke down and bought myself a new doll. This later version has tan skin and slightly darker blonde hair.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">I recently found a loose Happy Birthday Barbie at an antique mall which I suspect was an earlier version. She has pink skin, lighter blonde hair and looser curly bangs. Both dolls were made in the Philippines. This doll has a rubber band that looks original around part of her ponytail, making a bun.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Her curly bangs are representative of the curly bangs the first Barbie doll had in 1959.</span></p>skippercollectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00879839553080884379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4763458272128753592.post-57151925012403517102022-07-21T15:55:00.001-04:002022-07-21T15:55:09.741-04:00Talking PJ in baby dolls. hence her name<p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">It took me 50-something years to figure this out! And I'm surprised no one else ever has!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The 1969 Talking PJ came in an orange and pink micro-mini top and pink shorts. The shorts have a lace hem. It occurred to me the other day that that outfit is not a minidress with shorts underneath. It's a baby doll top! And the shorts are pettipants! This outfit is for bedtime! This is why her name is "PJ," and of course, "PJs" mean "pajamas."</span></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto;
