Dr. Roberts and Dr. Carson are scrubbed and ready for surgery. |
So I had to photograph my Barbie and Ken surgeon outfits with their face masks!
The dolls are Quick Curl Barbie in #7700 A Barbie Doctor's Professional Attire and Mod Hair Ken in #7703 A Busy Doctor's Professional Attire. You can also see one of the hairpieces from the blonde set of #8640 Hair Originals. Everything pictured is from 1973. The outfits are actually for surgeons.
I had to play with the outfits a little to get everything on right. Barbie's coat has only one snap, so I had to pin the bottom half to keep it closed. Don't want Barbie to be flashing everyone!
Once you have on the main pieces, add the mask next. The mask has two sets of ties, one longer than the other. The longer ties go around the middle of the head and tie in the center back. The shorter ties go around the nape of the neck.
Put the head covering on last. You may have to pin it to keep it flat on the head.
I have some of the accessories but not all of them. I have Barbie's scrubs jacket, stethoscope and towel (which Ken holds), plus her shoes. They are white square toe Francie heels from Korea. She also came with her medical diploma, a surgical head lamp and blue Princess telephone. I have Ken's white doctor shirt, but I don't have his shoes, which were white loafers from Korea. He, too, came with a head lamp which I lack.
The square toe Francie low heels do not stay on Barbie's feet. I put some little pieces of rolled-up tape inside them so that they will stay on.
Speaking of Francie, she also had a clinical care outfit in 1973. It was #7709 Candy Striped Uniform for Nurse's Helper. It is a very rare outfit and I've seen it only a few times in almost 40 years of collecting.
Barbie's outfit was designed by Carol Spencer, so I am assuming that Ken's and Francie's were also.
Even during surgery, Barbie has to have good hair! She wears a hairpiece with a pink ribbon from Hair Originals. |
