Skipper

All Skipper dolls have blue eyes unless otherwise noted. Other small accessories are usually included but are not mentioned.

Doll sizes:
Straight leg, bend leg, Twist ‘n Turn, Living, porcelain: 9 1/4 inches tall.
Growing Up, SuperTeen: 9 1/4 inches tall, but thinner with small breasts.
Teen Fun: 9 3/4 inches tall, stockier, with small breasts and hips.

Introduction

This is the list I have created of all the different Barbie dolls sold around the world between 1959 and 1999. I stopped at 1999 because that was the year I quit buying new dolls. I don’t own a 1959 doll, but I do have a 1959 outfit, and I figured 40 years’ worth of dolls was enough. I am not distinguishing between playline and collector dolls.

Here is what’s on the list:
a. New dolls introduced each year. If a doll were available for more than one year, I listed her only for the first year, unless significant changes in hair or clothing were made for her, such as the different original outfits over the years for the Twist N Turn Barbies.
b. Foreign dolls. If a doll were sold in a country outside the U.S., and the only differences were that the doll’s name had been translated into another language besides English, or she had slight differences in the face or clothing, she is listed with the American version of the doll. If a completely different doll were sold in a different country, she is listed separately.
c. If more than one version of a Barbie were sold in the United States, such as significantly different hair colors (blonde vs. brunette, etc.), or she is a different ethnic group, the dolls are listed separately. Slight variations in skin color, hairstyle, clothing and packaging will be mentioned in one line. For instance, the American Girl pageboys and sideparts are listed together.
d. Dressed dolls and gift sets, even if a basic version of the same doll, are also available separately.
e. If the first year’s version of a doll were made in one country, and the second in another country, that information is included by the year.

Here is what ISN’T on the list, and this list is probably more important:
a. Stock numbers. You can find them elsewhere.
b. Photographs. I own maybe 2 percent of all of the dolls listed, and to attempt to find photos of all 100 percent of them would not only take years, if I scanned copies of them from books I would violate numerous copyright laws.
c. The dolls from the 1960s, especially the bubble cuts, had umpteem variations in hair, eye shadow, lip and nail colors. I am listing them only by the major hair colors--blonde, brunette and redhead. I realize a blonde could be anything from platinum white to dishwater, and her lips and nails could be anywhere from sheer baby pink to blood red.
d. Barbie’s family (her siblings and cousins), her dozens and dozens of friends (both male and female), and her hundreds of acquaintances (celebrity, Disney, aliens, etc.).

In summary:
To attempt to show photos, to mention all the millions of tiny variations in the dolls, to list all the stock numbers and to detail the markings on the doll’s backside would take years. Not to mention the fact that if I attempted to upload all this information, I would probably shut down the entire Internet and cause the world to return to the Stone Age!

Cases 1965 to 1969 part one

Beige and blue Skipper trunks

I decided that it was easier to divide the cases up by decades, or half-decades, rather than by years. I am not going to write some generalizations about how the cases represent their time periods. I just want to show you the physical details that you might not be aware of.

The one detail that puzzles me is why Barbie and Stacey were drawn in Francie outfits and why Francie and Casey were shown in Barbie outfits.
